At the World Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg 1995, the head of the championship, Ulf Eklund, gave me the honor of storing all the medals in my glass safe in a private room at the Gothenburg stadium. After my adventures in Asia, this was my last escapade with the safes and incredible fun event.
This gave me the chance to socialize one on one with some of the world’s best athletes: Here the successful sprinter, Michael Johnson, world champion at 200 and 400 yards with four Olympic medals and eight World Championship medals, and Donovan Bailey, once the world’s fastest man and who won the 100 meters and others. My favorite though, was Merlene Ottey, premier world class athlete, with eight Olympic medals and 14 World Championship medals. It was a privilege to become friends with her afterward this.
